Anonymous asked: Now that Wolverine and the X-Men ended, any chance of seeing an X-Men - Arena written by Chris Yost and Craig Kyle? Similar to Avengers Arena?
Not really, no.
First: THANK YOU GOD!
Second: If I would trust somebody to pull Arena off well, it would be Kyle and Yost. Mostly because they wouldn’t steal from other people’s works and actually knew what they’re doing.
Third: THANK YOU GOD!
I wish to repeat this response with fireworks, a marching band and Dick Clarke’s Head announcing the proceedings.
Also why would Yost write again something he already wrote years ago on New X-Men, all while being as classy as Hopeless?
I liked Kyle & Yost’s New X-Men (may have something to do with the fact they made Surge may favorite character). But even they said they’re doing this because it felt appriorate - post-House of M era was darkest in X-Men history, so they wrote dark story. Today they probably wouldn’t, because t’s a lot brighter time for X-Men.
As for being classy - they gone out of their way to not kill Sophia, even through they easily could. Even the characters who they killed, aside from laurie, they carrefully picked up trying to piss off as little fans as possible. Because okay, Tag was fun, but he got least development from Helions and always felt overshadowed and Icarus, no matter how Weir & DePhilips tried, never lived down bein written by Chuck Austen.
Besides, I feel like K&Y tried to write from life and what they had in mind was mutant version of 9/11, while Hopeless just opypasted frrom Battle Royale. And while Hopeless made Arcade superbadass genisu who is step behind everyone and can beat everybody with his bare hands, Puriffers were always presented as cowardly terrorists who might be step behind X-Men and have awesome technology, but still lack balls to go against adults and stick to picking on children. And their plan finally fell apart and their leader got killed because even with literal window to the future they couldn’t control all the variables, while Arcade had backup plan on backup plan and got away with a slap on the wrist, laughing how he outsmarted everyone.
To be honest, I loved Kyle & Yost’s last issues on this series. Well, not the very last issues that were just a prologue to X-Force and the beginning of “Julian, the X-writer’s favorite punching bag”, but Quest for Magic and its epilogue. It was absolutely brillant, and not only because of the art.
But I stand to my point that Childhood’s end was pure garbage. All the adults were more stupid and uncompetent than in Avengers Arena. Frost was going all Pr Snape on X-23, so we could feel sorry for her.
Icarus was a irredeemable religious moron in this story. He got screwed as much as the Stamford New Warriors: even if he came back to life, he would still be responsible for the death of his fellows students and for trying to lure Sooraya in a trap. And by killing him, they put an end to the character developement Dust was having with the previous writers. It would have been interesting to see her interactions with him, and a possible deep friendship or romance. Instead of that, Dust’s characterisation from half of Kyle & Yost’s run has been reduced to “the girl who keeps praying and babling about Allah”.
And I wouldn’t say that they got out of their way to spare Sofia. It would be like saying that Hopeless got out of his way to not kill Hazmat. No, they rather got out of their way to get rid of her, so they could have a romance between Hellion and their pet character. And I say that as somebody who hated Sofia/Julian and loved Laura/Julian. When they got out of their way is when they destroyed the Grindstone Cafe and probably killed one of the few support characters the X-kids ever had. That was unecessary.
And the worst, the reason I said they were “classy” is because they kept mocking the character’s deaths and taunting the fans, saying in all interviews “who will we kill, this time”? I realise that most of those comments were tongue in cheek, but considering that the number of characters they actually killed, that was in poore taste. It’s a thing to joke about Nightcrawler or Human Torch’s death, knowing that they will always come back, but it’s different to mock some characters who are likely burried forever.
They also kept saying how lame Tag was and how lame his power was. Granted, he didn’t get much character developement, but that wasn’t a reason to make fun of his death. And his power was lame only for unimaginative writers. Weir and Defilippis hinter that it could evolve in something pretty badass, and even I could imagine 1 or 2 ways to make it so. Heck, David’s powers was weak too but Kyle & Yost turned him into a badass. So telling that Tag was lame is just a way to justify killing him. Not only Tag, but Onyxx and Gentle too were targets of their bloodlust and thay stated it. Gentle was lucky, Onyxx and bit less.
I said all the bad things I think of Kyle & Yost’s run, but the truth is I love it as much as I hate it. I would probably have felt the same way about Avengers Arena if it had been written back then and it wouldn’t have make me stop buying Marvel comics. But after years of witnessing Marvel killing the new characters and bringiing back the olds, Arena was more than I could stand. And if Childhood’s End had been written today, it would have been my jumping off point as well.
I WROTE TOO MUCH AND NOBODY WILL READ THAT REDUNDANT CRAP AND IF THEY DID I APOLOGIZE FOR THAT.
