Powdreams
Anonymous asked: (1/2) Hello Mr. Brevoort. I just read your comment regarding Hank Pym and I must say, as a reader, that I don't agree with it. You say that you don't think the character is redeemable, but writers through the years have DONE a lot to prove he's a great guy (even having other characters say it out flat!). Busiek, Slott, Gage, Humphries, Waid... have done great with Pym over the years, and have made him a great hero.
I didn’t say that Hank wasn’t redeemable, I said that i don’t think that any other moment in Hank’s history will ever cast as huge a shadow as that slap. And i think that’s true. Ask ten random comic book fans about Hank Pym, and most of them will probably go to the slap before any other story. For good or ill, that’s how the readership identifies him now.
That’s really a shame.
Peter Parker isn’t the man who slaped MJ.
Rogue is not the woman who mind-raped Ms Marvel.
Wolverine is not the man who stabed Rachel Summers.
Colossus is not the man who almost killed Pete Wisdom for “stealing muh waifu”.
But Hank Pym, despite all the good he does, will always be the man who slaped Janet.
There are some reminders that Black Widow was (is?) an assassin, that Thor raided countries with the vikings or that Tony Stark was a death dealer, but none of them gets as much crap as Pym.
Selective indignation at its best.
